Travertine Cleaning in Gainesville, FL

Travertine is limestone that has been formed by hot springs. Water movement caused erosion of the stone creating numerous holes of varying sizes. Travertine is similar to marble in that it can be polished, and is sensitive to acids and household cleaners with chelating agents.

Tips to clean and protect your travertine floors:

·Test and seal the stone – Check and make sure the stone in your home was sealed when it was installed. Sealing will help in the event of spilled red wine, cranberry juice, or another aggressive agent.

·Wipe up spills immediately – It is best to clean up spills quickly using hot water and a stone cleaning product. Do not use store bought products that contain acids, alkalis, or other chemicals when cleaning travertine stone (Ex: vinegar, lemon or orange cleaning agents, ammonia, bleach).

·Dust mop travertine floors – Use a clean non-treated, dry dust mop regularly. Once a week, use a wet mop with hot water and a specially formulated cleaning agent.

·Protect and cover – Door mats and carpet runners should be used to help keep foot traffic from bringing in elements that will damage the travertine. Prevention is the best remedy when it comes to maintaining your floor.

·Poultices for stubborn stains – If normal cleaning procedures cannot remove a stain on your travertine, a poultice may be the solution.

o   Create a paste combining a formulated stone cleaner with baking powder

o   Smooth this over the stain and cover with a clear plastic wrap

o   Let it stand for several days - the poultice will slowly draw out the stain

o   Remove the poultice with warm water and buff with a cotton cloth
